Hallo liebes Forum,

|

Sorry for the English text...
I have been involved in documentation projects at the JDHT office and worked my way through literally thousands of (original) sales records. I have never seen a modification in the VIN number of a car, and I think that such a modification would have legal consequences as well.
"Registration" is "Kennzeichen", not VIN (or predecessor of VIN), without doubt.
Until ~1976 the registration number of the first owner was recorded, if it was known. For many (many many) cars it was not known, so then that information is just missing in the books.
For re-registration I see a few possibilities: The UK has the possibility of "personalized plates", also known as "vanity plates". Which means that -for extra money- you can get a registration number with a letter combination of your own choice (within certain limits). This becomes your personal property and you can transfer that number from one car to the next if you want. The original number is then "frozen" for later when you sell that car again.
These plates can be bought/sold. Google for "personalized registration number sale" and see how this goes. Really fancy combinations are sometimes sold for 50.000 - 100.000 pounds.
Normal registration numbers have one letter for the year, and the other letters form a combination that shows which registration office was involved. This means that it shows information of roughly in which geographical region the car was originally sold. Sometimes a car was sent to a dealer, then registered, then ended up in the showroom, and sometimes another dealer would have the car transferred to avoid waiting time for a customer. This could be a reason for re-registration, although I don't think that that would be a very common situation.
In any case it is very rare that information about re-registration would become known at the factory and thus end up in the sales records. Are you sure that the hand writing on your certificate is done by the JDHT? It is very easy for them to print a new certificate so why would they modify an existing certificate? My suggestion: mail them a copy of the modified certificate and ask whether the modification is done by them.
Hope this helps,

Thanks h.j.thomassen!
